It’s a double whammy: not only do you have to find the perfect gift on Valentine’s Day, you’re shopping for someone who’s gluten-free or vegan, or both. Luckily, a couple of enterprising bakers in metro Detroit and Ann Arbor have got you covered with tasty, locally made baked goods for every dietary persuasion. (But really, you don’t need to be sans wheat to enjoy one of these delicious-looking creations.)

First up is a heart-shaped raw cake, served by Cacao Tree Cafe in Royal Oak. (Yes, that gorgeous picture is both vegan and gluten-free.) Sweetened with almonds, coconuts and dates, the frosting is made from cashews, raspberries and other fruits. You should stop drooling and contact the cafe about ordering one. Can’t do nuts? The pastry chef there would be happy to work with you. It’s best to pre-order the cake, though they do have some in the cafe.

A couple of goodies are in store with Ethel’s Edibles. They’re having their grand opening for their bakery in St. Claire Shores just a week before Valentine’s! On the 14th, they’ll be at a Valentine’s pop-up hosted by pot & box in Corktown in Detroit. And treats-wise, they’ll have specials on gluten-free cupcakes for Valentine’s. Their baked goodies are available at various metro locations, including the Westborn Markets, Plum Markets, Eastern Market— and their new storefront, of course. Find all their locations on their website.

Those delectable cake pops are made by the Motown Freedom Bakery, which will also have Valentine’s themed cupcakes, brownies and cookies. Their full menu is up here.  (Psst: like them on Facebook, so you can find out when their gluten-free Girl Scout cookies will be available.) Orders need to be placed by Sunday, Feb. 10. They’ll also be at the V-Day pop-up in Corktown on Valentine’s Day itself.

Sugar Kisses Bakery in Berkley also has some gluten-free good options. For Valentine’s, they have mini opera and strawberry torts, truffles, and heart-shaped cookies. The truffles are dairy free and the cookies are vegan. Orders should be placed by next Tuesday, Feb, 12th, but the bakery hopes to have them through Valentine’s.

For the 14th, Tasty Bakery in Ann Arbor will have frosted Valentine’s cookies, along with a line of gluten-free as well as vegan pastries. Find her goods at the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, or at Babo, Mighty Good Coffee and Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea. For Valentine’s, orders should be placed three days ahead. Also, for Purim, at the end of the month, Tasty Bakery will be making gluten-free Hamantaschen.
