With the Game of Thrones season finale tonight, I thought a themed recipe would be appropriate.— and I love the food descriptions from the book.
The mention of this soup in a Game of Thrones book made me very curious, since soup usually involves vegetables, spices and lots of simmering. Fruit, the sweeter counterpart to veggies, doesn’t seem like it would hold up to the heat it takes to make a good soup.
This gentle spiciness of this soup changed my mind. The almond milk gives it a lovely nutty flavor, and the ginger is a great counterpart to the sweetness of the apple and cantaloupe. If you have other seasonal fruit you think would work, try it out! I think this recipe would adapt very well.

1 cantaloupe, peeled and diced into cubes
1 tbsp grated ginger
1 tsp basil (fresh or dried)
1 apple, peeled and sliced
honey to taste (or agave nectar)
1 cup almond milk
1 tbsp fresh mint
dash sea salt (optional)
- After peeling and dicing the apple, boil til it is soft.
- Let the apple cool, then add the almond milk and apple to a blender and puree.
- Simmer the apple and almond milk over low heat. Add the ginger (and a pinch of cinnamon, if you like.) Continue to heat until it thickens slightly. Set aside and let cool.
- Blend the cantaloupe, basil and mint in a blender until completely liquified.
- Once the apple and almond milk have cooled, add them to the blender as well.
- Pour the mixture into a bowl and let refrigerate for at least one hour.
- Serve garnished with mint and almonds.
