I was January for Shimmy Shack’s 2015 calendar, Visit their food truck and try their delicious food.

Vegetarian for 20 years, gluten-free for four, I’m a proud Detroiter and Michigan native. What started as a food blog has evolved into both a travel and food blog— and I sometimes write about food in literature, as well. I’ve lived in the countries Czech Republic, Poland and Turkey, and Michigan, New Mexico, California and Hawai’i.

I’m the other of A History of Wayne State in Photos, available from Wayne State Press, and I contribute articles to the fantastic website Historic Detroit.

I love this hog dog because it’s not made of meat. Outside of Plath’s meats in Roger’s City, up north.

One aim with this blog is to be a clearing house for all things vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free in and around Michigan, with a focus on the Detroit area. I try and highlight local businesses and products, though I do review national brands here as well. Whether you’re looking for a good veggie-friendly restaurant or a good grocery store in greater Detroit, this is the place to be.

While I ain’t a perfect cook, I do love trying new recipes and making a mess of my kitchen— and I like to try and recreate the meals I’ve had while traveling, be it in Hawai’i or Turkey. Other times, I try to adapt food I’ve had in diners or restaurants across Detroit, like Arabic, Polish or Greek dishes. All recipes are vegetarian and gluten-free! I like to try and make vegan dishes as well.

Even while I’m overseas, my Facebook page will have vegetarian and gluten-free news from the greater metro Detroit area. You can also find some of my restaurant reviews for places in Europe on Trip Advisor and in the Metro Times.

If you want to contact me, I can be reached at: V dot 8Mile at gmail.com. Name’s Evelyn Aschenbrenner.

  1. Hi, I noticed you recently started following us on social media. How did you hear about us?
If you aren’t familiar with our products, we have gluten free, vegan, and raw desserts, guac, salsas, snacks, dips, etc.
How would you feel about us giving you some of our products in exchange for reviewing them online?
    Thanks!

  2. I saw your booth at Eastern Market a few weeks ago, and couldn’t resist trying the guacamole!
I’d be happy to review your products. Drop me a line: v.8mile at gmail dot com.

    • Traveling while veggie is an adventure in itself. Quite like your own traveling stories. Thanks for stopping by and reading my posts!

  3. Hey there! I am planning a latke contest for Dec. 2 or Dec. 11 – would you like to be a judge and taste the recipes as well as write about them? It will take place in West Bloomfield. If interested, please email me at lynne@yourppl.com and I will tell you more. Thanks!

  4. I like that you’re promoting good health and a proper focus on nutrition, something severely lacking in our world, and certainly here in North America. Although 100% gluten free isn’t for me, I’m all for a move towards plant-based diets, and a support system to help people who are struggling to eat more healthy overall. Keep up the great work! 🙂

  5. Hi there! I really enjoy reading your blog and was hoping to ask you a question or two about it. Could you please email me when you have a chance? Thank you!
