Oakland & Macomb County: Veggie-friendly and gluten-free restaurants

I’ve indicated whether each restaurant is vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. Restaurants with vegetarian only menus are in bold.

Om Cafe, Ferndale (vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free)
I love the green exterior of this place, and the food is wonderful as well. One of metro Detroit’s older vegetarian restaurants, and for good reasons. Make your own nori rolls, a rotating selection of vegan desserts— and I dare you to follow them on Facebook and not have your mouth water daily.

Greenspace Cafe, Ferndale (all vegan)                                                                       The newest, much talked about, vegan restaurant in Ferndale, the menu is amazing, with artisanal vegan cheese, small plates and Asian inspired dishes, all with the eye to be healthy while exuding flavor.

Blue Nile, Ferndale (vegetarian)
Ethiopian food is known for lentils and teff bread— and plenty of vegetarian options.

The Fly Trap's Veggie Rumble.

The Inn Season Cafe, Royal Oak (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free)
One of metro Detroit’s oldest vegetarian restaurants, and for good reason: excellent recipes, in season produce, and wonderful produce. If you plan to get brunch on Sundays, count on making a reservation.

Cacao Tree Cafe, Royal Oak (vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free)                                         Where raw foods meets delicious, the Cacao Tree is a great spot for lunch or dinner. Their dessert selection is amazing, and their smoothie selection superb.

Try it Raw, Birmingham (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free)                                  Bright, cheery cafe, with a great rotating selection of specials and smoothies.

Upidi Restaurant, Farmington Hills (vegetarian)
Indian curry is always a great option for vegetarians, and with this restaurant, don’t have to worry about meat in any dish.

Chive Kitchen, Farmington (all vegan)                                                                   A bright, airy cafe, and a great stop for lunch or dinner with a drink (they serve alcohol.)

The Treehouse for Earth’s Children, Farmington (vegetarian)                                Part health food store, part vegetarian cafe.

LA Cafe, Waterford (vegetarian and vegan)                                                               A good place to stop and get coffee and lunch, as they’ve got veggie burgers, black bean burgers and vegetable lasagne on the menu.

The Root, White Lake (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free)
Their menu makes a point of listing all the appetizers and entrees that are gluten-free, and they have a rotating selection of both vegan and vegetarian entrees.

Macomb County

The Clean Plate, Shelby Township (all vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free)                A great selection of salads and sandwiches, daily soups and hot entrees make this the best— and only!— vegetarian eatery in Macomb. Plus, they feature the same tempting desserts as the Cacao Tree in Royal Oak (both restaurants have the same owners.)

  1. Wonderful list of my favs, I would only remove the TreeHouse, due to the unfortunate fact that it is FILTHY in the kitchen. Such a great premise, but scary in there.
